New media and HIV prevention at AIDS 2012

I hope you all are doing well and that all preparations are going smoothly for the upcoming AIDS 2012 Conference in Washington. With the invites to sessions/events are coming fast and furious I wanted to point out a few items that can be found on IAVI’s conference page www.iavi.org/aids2012 and items on new/social media.
There are a few sessions looking at aspects of new media that will be using the hashtag #newmediaHIV in addition to the conference-wide #AIDS2012 hash tag.
One of these is a global village workshop Monday July 23 3-4:30 pm in GV Session Room 2 (http://bit.ly/hivscience140), where we’ll be looking at the challenges of communicating complex HIV prevention science via social media outlets. We organizers of this workshop – AVAC, IAVI, IRMA, HIV/AIDS Network Coordination (HANC) and National Black Gay Men’s Advocacy Coalition (NBGMAC) – are really hoping that this will be a hands-on, brainstorming session that will generate ideas of newbies and seasoned social media pros alike.
In advance of this session, we’re asking people to share their experiences and questions on Twitter before the event via the #newmediaHIV hash, and we’ll be posting a series of questions next week. See the attached flier for details -- and we hope to see many of you there (you don’t need to be registered for the conference to attend this as it’s in the Global Village).
The US government also has organized a satellite session on new media Monday evening (6:30-8:30 Mini Room 4 http://blog.aids.gov/2012/06/
Also, for those who are working for an organization that works in advocacy, I also hope you and/or your colleagues will join us Tuesday July 24 from 3:00-4:30 pm at the PATH office a couple blocks from the convention center (455 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 1000) to discuss lessons learned from advocacy for new HIV/AIDS-related prevention tools and how we can adapt strategies to the current global health advocacy and policy environment. The advocacy agenda for HIV/AIDS-related issues at the national and global levels is changing dramatically. The global financial crisis and increasing demands on strapped country-level budgets have created enormous challenges. And global health and development advocacy is shifting as the international community begins to talk about what comes after the Millennium Development Goals, among other issues.
Join Aeras, AVAC, the Global Health Technologies Coalition (GHTC), the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), and the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) to discuss lessons learned from advocacy for new HIV/AIDS-related prevention tools. At the event, advocates who work on national and global advocacy will discuss how to adapt strategies to the current global health advocacy and policy environment. The event will also provide attendees with the opportunity to strategize with colleagues working across advocacy issues, and to prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
